Scoring a Touchdown: Madden NFL Arcade Tips

Madden NFL Arcade is now available for both Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network, and judging from our review, we love it.  However, some players may feel lost by the simplified passing/defensive system and the multiple Game Changers, but fear not.  We’re here to help with these tips.

Don’t be fooled by the rankings:  Despite the fact that some teams are better than others in the NFL (the Colts, for instance, could stomp a mudhole in the Raiders’ defense), the rankings in Madden NFL Arcade are mere numbers.  The Bengals, for example, are ranked 69.  Considering their performance over the last few weeks (perfect in their division), that makes no sense.  However, you can choose from any team and expect an equal chance at winning, thanks to the help of the Game Changers.

Scoring is easy in Madden NFL Arcade...if you know how to do it.

Mix up the run and gun:  Let's say you dig the Colts.  You might feel tempted to let Peyton Manning do all the work with short, medium and long pass plays.  However, keep in mind that the players you’re up against expect that.  That's why you should run the ball. There are times where it will work better than expected, although once in a while, you’ll still get nailed for little to no yardage.  But better to have someone make a forward attempt than have your quarterback sacked and you lose major yardage.  Be creative.

Don’t always rush for the quarterback on defense:  Some players feel that controlling a player on the front line on defense will automatically get you a sack in a game.  That isn’t true in Madden NFL Arcade.  Defenders are able to hold their own on the line, even if you tap the A button to give them a big shove.  This leaves the QB wide open to make a pass to an awaiting receiver, ready to dash for the end zone.  Play it safe and cover one of the outside receivers.  That way, your computer teammates still try for the QB, and you’re on the outside corner in case someone tries to make a run for the end zone.

Use Big Hit when you’ve got the shot:  When you close in on a receiver, you’ve got a chance to jar the ball loose.  Hit the Big Hit button (A or X, depending on the platform) and if you nail them at the right time, you’ve got a shot at a key fumble.  If the ball slips out, be quick and recover it before one of the remaining receivers.  Also, by hitting this action button at the right time, you’ve got a golden opportunity for an interception.

Missed the tackle by that much.

Know your Game Changers:  Sure, the Game Changers pop in and out and random, and sometimes you’ll get good ones (Fumbillitis, Fast Pass).  But keep an eye on the top of the screen for which one you receive.  Sometimes, they’ll be your golden ticket for nailing the perfect play, such as freezing the opposing QB for a sack, or setting up decoys so your pass play meets with success.  Don’t be afraid to study them a little, so you’ll know what weapons you have on the next play.  It makes all the difference online.

Don’t be afraid to go for two:  Madden NFL Arcade offers the chance to automatically get the extra point (no kicking mini-game here), but there are times you’ll wish you had gone for two points.  Don’t let these opportunities pass you by.  Sure, it’s risky, but when you come down to the 35-point limit and it’s do-or-die, those extra points will do you good.  Besides, with the right pass play (or, for some teams, run play), it’s easy to score.

Don't play this like Madden:  Simulation is out the window, and what you’re left with is a fun, quick game of football.  The plays run fast, the aspects you’d find in a real game (penalties, extra point kicking) are long gone and the atmosphere is similar to the party-like one you’d find in an arena football game.  Just kick back and have fun.
